TRIP HIGHLIGHT
6 Belvelly
No trip to County Cork is complete without a visit to an artisan food producer, and the effervescent Frank Hederman is more than happy to show you around Belvelly (021-481 1089; www.frankhederman.com; Belvelly; free for individuals, charge for groups; by reservation 9am-5pm Mon-Fri), the oldest natural smokehouse in Ireland. Seafood and cheese are smoked here, but the speciality is fish – in particular, salmon. In a traditional process that takes 24 hours from start to finish, the fish is filleted and cured before being hung in the tiny smokehouse over beech woodchips. Phone or email Frank to arrange your visit.
The Drive » It’s just 14km from Belvelly to Midleton.

7 Midleton
Aficionados of fine Irish whiskey will know the main reason to linger in this bustling market town is to visit the restored 200-year-old building housing the Jameson Experience (021-461 3594; www.jamesonwhiskey.com; Old Distillery Walk; tours adult/child €16/8; shop 9am-6pm, tours 11am, 1pm, 2.45pm & 4.15pm) – and to purchase bottles of Jameson Whiskey, of course. Exhibits and tours explain the process of taking barley and creating whiskey (Jameson is today made in a modern factory in Cork).
Midleton’s farmers market (www.midletonfarmersmarket.com; Main St; 9am-2pm Sat), behind the courthouse, is one of Cork’s best markets, with bushels of local produce and producers who are happy to chat.
The original and sister establishment to Cork’s Farmgate Café, Farmgate Restaurant (021-463 2771; www.farmgate.ie; Broderick St; mains lunch €11-18, dinner €15-26; restaurant 9am-5pm Tue & Wed, 9am-5pm & 6.30-9.30pm Thu-Sat, shop 9am-6pm Tue-Sat) also has a shop selling amazing baked goods and local, often organic, produce, cheeses and preserves.
